Carl  Hertzog
Doctor of Literature  1971
Status: conferred

He is the first graphic artist to combine the visual richness of Southwestern heritage with its verbal expression. His printing has been that of a master nurtured and enlightened by his imaginative grasp of the artistic possibilities of the graphic arts. As a result, his books and broadsides have brought to the "Printer of the Pass" an international reputation. Books from his hands draw word and format into such harmonious relationship that text is given extension far beyond that of ordinary print; and yet each of his works has been subjected to the most painstaking disciplines of proportion and arrangement. For his uncompromising artistic standards and craftsmanship exercised in the production of over 200 books in a period of nearly fifty years, we are pleased to present him this day for the degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa.
